King Edward’s School, Birmingham (1947-55); specialized in Classics.
Pembroke College, Cambridge (1958-61); Modern & Medieval Languages – Hungarian and Russian.
BA – 1961;
MA – 1965.

Employment
1963-64 Teacher at King Edward’s Grammar School, Aston, Birmingham.
1964-67 Fellow in Turkish, School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London. This was a three-year post, requiring a graduate in Russian to learn Turkish with the intention of moving on to Central Asian studies and establishing these at SOAS. Unfortunately this coincided with the start of financial problems for the universities, and the expected permanent post did not materialize.
1967-91 Teacher (Russian & French) at Highgate School, London.
1991-     Freelance literary translator, mostly from Hungarian, occasionally from Russian.
2006     Moved to Hungary
2008     Awarded American PEN translation fund grant. Second in John Dryden Translation Competition.
2009    Füst Milán translation award, Hungarian Academy of Sciences
